Dartmouth is very busy at the moment with two major projects underway on the river.

The Dart Harbour Navigation Authority (DHNA) Hoodown facility upgrade is nearing completion after a £750,000 facelift. Hoodown (on the Kingswear side of the river) is used by DHNA for all the river maintenance. There are considerable maintenance issues on the river with over 270 pontoons to maintain and around 1600 buoys. On top of that there are the DHNA craft to maintain in best working order. Previously it was necessary to send pontoons away for refurbishment - now this work can be completed locally.

The Hoodown facility was built in the mid-1980’s out of what was once a wartime base used by the Free French. During the recent 6-month upgrade there have been numerous challenges to overcome some of which date back to some of its earlier use.

Meanwhile on the other side of the river work started on 28th November upgrading the connecting bridge to Town Quay. The original bridge, used by countless thousands of users throughout the year, was suffering from deterioration of the main structure. It is being replaced with two brand new bridges, which will permit future maintenance to be much easier as one bridge can be removed while the other remains open. This will permit Town Quay to remain open even while work is underway. At the moment with the bridge removed the passenger ferries are having to berth alongside the Embankment.

When all the work is completed Dartmouth harbour will be back to its busy usual self and ready for the 2012 season.
