The Olympic Sailing Begins!
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has taken temporary ownership of the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Village in Portland. 700 athletes and 550 officials will stay at the Sailing Village, with about half that number using the accommodation during the Paralympic Games.
Olympic Trivia
Olympic Sailing began in Paris in 1900 with both men’s and women’s competitions. The sport has appeared at every Olympic Games since, with the exception of St Louis in 1904.
Sailing introduced its first female only medal at the 1988 Games in Seoul. Before that all classes were mixed.
The sport’s name was changed from Yachting to Sailing at the Sydney 2000 Games.
There are 10 different Olympic sailing classes, six for men, four for women. You may see dinghies, keelboats or windsurfing boards. Each class comprises a series of races with points awarded based on position: The winner gets one point, the second gets two points, etcetera.
Race 1, Men’s Finn begins today, Sunday 29th at 12.00pm at Weymouth and Portland in Dorset.
Do you have tickets to go down to The Nothe near Weymouth and Portland? It is said they have some of the best natural sailing waters in the UK.
