Who Saves Lives on the Essex Coast?
The Essex coast has so many good places to visit by boat. Whether you cruise by sailboat or motorboat this coast can be both fun and challenging. You have to be aware of the sandbanks and the tides. Do you enjoy Essex with a Beneteau or a Jeanneau? Do you prefer Fairline, Sunseekers or Westerly boats? When you’re looking for a boat for sale in Essex what safety features and equipment do you look for?
The Maldon Standard recently reported that Burnham Lifeboat Station will be open to visitors this Sunday 24th June from 11am to 4pm. The station has been serving the area since 1966 and has an open day every year where they invite the public to view their lifeboats and floating boathouses. Crew members will be on hand to answer questions about their work. The RNLI is a charity and has been saving lives at sea for about 200 years. Wherever possible the service is provided by volunteers and is supported by voluntary donations and legacies.
The UK Coastguard Centres coordinate Search and Rescue along the UK coastline. They also provide shipping information and a number of other valuable services. However, the government is currently planning to turn the UK's 18 Coastguard Co-ordination Centres into three 24 hour centres and five that are only open during daylight hours. These suggested closures will affect both maritime shipping and the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who use the water for leisure.
This petition to Save the UK Coastguard Centres hopes to persuade the government to review their decision. Coastguard SoS is a website raising awareness of the plans and campaigning to keep the stations open. Find out what your local MP thinks by checking their table What Your MP Thinks.
