South Devon College Marine Academy has been presented with a gift of a 22foot long sailing yacht – for students to restore and sail on the River Dart.

The Jaguar 22, a four berth, lifting keel cruiser designed by Frank V Butler, has been presented to the college by Baltic Wharf Ltd through St Peter’s Quay based yacht brokers Boatshed Dartmouth.

The yacht, which is in “a sorry and abandoned state” and filled with rain water had been left unattended in the Baltic Boatyard at Totnes. Drained of water and relaunched, she was towed back to the Noss-based Marine Academy alongside the college’s work boat, Seajoy, down the River Dart.

The unnamed yacht, will now be cleaned, overhauled, its keel lifting mechanism winch restored and refurbished and used by Yacht Operations degree students to build handling skills on a keelboat. They will be able to sail it as skippers in charge and give sailing experience to their boat building student colleagues who have helped restore the yacht.

Adrian Bevin, programme co-ordinator for Marine Engineering and Boatbuilding at the Marine Academy said: “This is a remarkable demonstration of how the marine industry is pulling together. It is fantastic that local industry recognises the value of the college in marine training. Paul Singer was instrumental in making this boat available to the college. Baltic Boatyard even craned it into the water for free.”

Patrick Sims, Manager, Baltic Wharf Ltd, Totnes said: “Baltic Wharf are delighted to have been able to assist South Devon College with the gift of this yacht for their students. As local employers we are keen to help out especially where marine training and education is concerned.”

Paul Singer, Yacht Broker, Boatshed Dartmouth, said: “Boatshed Dartmouth were delighted to have been able to help broker the supply of this boat to South Devon College. As active members of the marine community in the South West we are always pleased and willing to help and encourage youth involvement, employment and training.”
